Travelling to the Isle of Wight by Ferry

Wightlink run two car ferry services to the Isle of Wight, one running from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and takes around 45 minutes and the other from Lymington to Yarmouth which is around a 40 minutes journey both ferries take cars, motor homes, bikes and foot passengers. Wightlink also operate a high speed foot passenger Catamaran which runs from Portsmouth harbour to Ryde pier head and takes approximately 22 minutes.

Red Funnel is the main car ferry service from Southampton and travels to East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the journey time is approximately 55 to 60 minutes and takes both cars,motor homes, bikes and foot passengers. For those travelling by foot Red Funnel operates the Red Jet passenger service which runs from Southampton into West Cowes or Cowes as it is known on the Isle of Wight and the journey time is approximately 25 minutes.

Hovertravel is the quickest foot passenger service to the Isle of Wight with journey times of only 10 minutes, the ferry runs from Southsea in Portsmouth into Ryde on the Isle of Wight and has easy links on each end for people travelling by train, couch or bus.

Southampton and Portsmouth ferry terminals are both linked to London by fast rail services, the journey time taking approximately one and a half hours. The London terminus is Waterloo Station. Tickets can be purchased online to include the foot passenger ferry to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

The National Express network connects via interchanges at London, Birmingham and Bristol to the Wightlink ferry terminal at Portsmouth Harbour and at London and Southampton interchanges for Lymington.

The London airports of Heathrow and Gatwick are both about one and a half hours by road from the ferry terminals. Competitive long haul taxis can be arranged and these are likely to be less expensive than public transport if there are two or more passengers. Travellers from Europe can fly directly to Southampton airport which is about twenty minutes by taxi from the Southampton ferry terminal or a trip jump on the train into Southampton Central where you can pick up the free bus to the Red Jet foot passenger terminal.
