Captain Alfred Buckham: The Sky Traveller
Dimbola is delighted to host the first major retrospective exhibition of the work of pioneering aerial photographer Captain Alfred G Buckham
Creating spectacular images in the face of technical and physical adversity the madcap daredevil Captain Alfred G Buckham (1879-1956) was the foremost aerial photographer of his day. Between 1908 to the early 1930s Buckham risked life and limb to create aerial portraits that are awe-inspiring, poetic and works of technical brilliance.
Alfred Buckham was courageous, almost recklessly so, insecurely squeezed with his large plate camera into a flimsy aircraft taking photographs nobody before had even dared.
Spirited artistry with the blood of a risk-taker coursing through his veins, Buckham was a one-off. His first ambition was to be a painter but after seeing an exhibition by Turner he went home and burnt his own work. Those painterly yearnings however did not go up in smoke and they found expression in his aerial photography. During World War 1 he was the first head of aerial reconnaissance for the Royal Navy and later made Captain in the Royal Naval Air Service. However by 1919 he was discharged as one hundred percent disabled, the result of some nine crashes that left him breathing through a tube in his neck for the rest of his life – but did that stop him soaring to dizzying heights risking loss of consciousness to capture spectacular images with his unwieldly large format camera? Definitely not, in fact to add to the drama he would often prefer to go up in stormy weather!
“I always stand up to make an exposure and, taking the precaution to tie my right leg to the seat, I am free to move about rapidly, and easily, in any desired direction; and loop the loop and indulge in other such delights, with perfect safety,” he wrote in 1927!
In an arcane precursor to Photoshop, Buckham also manipulated photographs marrying different cloud formations to landscapes, adding in airplanes and even painting features himself illustrating his aesthetic desires to get the image right.
When you consider not only the tremendous technical challenges he faced but also the restrictions posed on him by his disability, Buckham’s body of work is unquestioningly a marvel of photographic genius. In romantic tradition, the vast spectacle of land and cloudscape is fixed by the lens of Buckham, the sky traveller, and renders the viewer simultaneously insignificant and potent. As Turner is undoubtedly one of Britain’s greatest painters so is Buckham one of our greatest photographers.

PRESS RELEASE: WICKED NIGHTS …the land of twisted imagination!
WORK HAS GROUND TO A HALTON BLACKGANG CHINE’S LATEST ATTRACTION, DUE TO WORKERS REFUSING TO RETURN TO THE DEMOLITION SITE…
Work has suddenly stopped on Blackgang Chine’s latest attraction due to workers refusing to re-enter the demolition site, The Cursed Mill. Whilst we cannot reveal what has happened, we are investigating the paranormal events, believed to be caused by a monk’s curse from the 16thCentury.
Following this terrifying incident, all planned building work has stopped. No-one is to re-enter the building, until… the launch of Wicked Nights.
Wicked Nights is a brand-new horror event, coming to the Isle of Wight, making its home at Blackgang Chine. Demolition site, The Cursed Mill, will be opening its doors every evening, from the 20th October to 3rd November, from 6 pm – 10 pm… should you be courageous enough to brave the curse?
This high-intensity experience includes The Cursed Mill: A Terrifying Tour, a hair-raising, blood-curdling experience that will leave you full of fright – it’s not for the faint-hearted. You’ll join a ‘Live Action’ tour through the demolition site, designed to terrify unexpecting guests… will you brave the curse? Expect sudden loud noises, strobe lighting, audio and visual effects, darkness, close encounters and ghastly odours.
Survivors of The Cursed Mill: A Terrifying Tour can endure a host of ‘Wicked Nights’ terror experiences including the Freaky Fair, Ghostly Maze, Coaster of Doom, Slaughter Slide, Hall of Horrors, Barmy Barrels and a guest attraction, the Touring Ghost Train, for a truly wicked night of terror.
The Wicked Nights dark theatre continues with street-style entertainment. Characters include The Ringmaster Magician. Watch in awe (or disgust!) impulsive horror magic, plusThe Possessed Doll, an aerial and contortion artist.
Whilst you’re enjoying the freaky entertainment, soak up those nerves with a Chilling Chilli, Fiery Pumpkin Soup, Severed Finger Hotdog or even Pizza Skulls. To ease that tension there will be a bar serving a pungent mix of beers, cider and wine.
Wicked Nights brings a whole new level of horror, making its home at Britain’s oldest theme park, Blackgang Chine…the land of twisted imagination, on the Isle of Wight. The event will be an unforgettable experience… if you survive to tell the tale!
Tickets start from just £15.00. Don’t wait for the reviews, be one of the first to experience Wicked Nights by booking your tickets at www.blackgangchine.com/wickednights. Will you be able to tell the tale of Wicked Nights?

Dimbola Close Up – Wet Plate Course
£400 per person or £200 per person for Saturday Only (Includes lunch in Julia’s Tea Room)
Following in the footsteps of Julia Margaret Cameron. Two-day wet plate collodion workshop with Honza Sakař. A rare opportunity to create stunning images in the very birthplace of the close-up.
Dimbola is the former Isle of Wight home of Julia Margaret Cameron and where, at 48, she took up photography and propelled it into fine art.
This two-day workshop serves as a hands-on introduction to this challenging but beautiful photographic process. Students will learn the history of the process, techniques for preparing the plate, how to pour collodion, exposing, developing, fixing and varnishing. You will not only be using the same antique processes that Julia Margaret Cameron used but also working in the very place where she created iconic images of Tennyson, Darwin, Herschel and many more!
The course is taught by the exceptionally talented and award-winning Czech photographer Honza Sakař. Honza has been using this arcane photographic process for over five years. He has his own wet plate collodion photographic studio in Prague. In 2016 Honza became a double 1st prize winner at the Czech Press Photo Awards in both the Portrait and Art categories.
A two-day introduction to the wet plate collodion process is available over the following weekends:
Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th September 2018
Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th November 2018
Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th March 2019
£400 per person or £200 per person for Saturday Only (Includes lunch in Julia’s Tea Room)
The wet collodion process was invented in 1851 and widely used throughout the 19th century. This is hands-on stuff, as each image is handcrafted by the photographer. The metal plates are exposed in the camera while still wet, developed and fixed in a darkroom. This magical alchemy produces some truly stunning results. Each person will leave with original prints of their work, following in the footsteps of Julia Margaret Cameron with their own Dimbola close-up!
To book please call 01983 756814 or email firstname.lastname@example.org stating the preferred dates.

Mrs B is a born and bred Island girl, who has happily followed the ‘bungee’ tradition of Island natives – you know – the one where you always keep bouncing back!
After a fulfilling creative career on the “North Island” ( known as the mainland to non- Islanders!), that included photography, styling, festival and event organisation, she soon settled back into the ways of Island life. She fell in love, got married and in two shakes of a lamb’s tail there were three instead of two!
Mrs. B has always had a bit of an addiction for all things crafty, and loves nothing more than spending a few hours dallying around with her vintage handcrafted treasures.
Over the weekend you will make a selection of gorgeous crafty Christmasness. You may wish to venture into Cowes for a Saturday night out …. or simply cook a meal and relax in front of your log burner. There is lots to do on Sunday if you wish too …. maybe a walk in the forest or along a wintery coastline before cosying in the studio where the coffee pot will be on and the logs blazing …..
