The fifth annual Harp on Wight Festival will be taking place at various venues in Ryde, Isle of Wight from October 26th – 30th October inclusive.
Since the first event in 2014, the festival has quickly developed a reputation for first class concerts featuring top level international harpists across a wide range of genres. At this early stage, this years line up looks equally exciting.
Already announced are the Corbalan Brothers – Sixto and Juanjo – from Paraguay who thrilled the audience on their last visit to the Isle of
Wight in November 2016 which was part of their national tour.
Last spring Harp on Wight appointed Anne Denholm – the Official Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales – as
their Patron. Anne performed as a soloist in the opening concert of last years festival, and she will be back again this year this time as
a member of the group The Hermes Experiment – a quartet consisting of harp, clarinet, soprano voice and double bass performing early/baroque
The American harpist Lily Neill has been a popular visitor to the Isle of Wight in recent years, having performed there seven times – twice in shared concerts with the Senegalese kora player Kadially Kouyate. Lily is a musician of outstanding ability and her concerts refelect many styles – Scottish, Irish, Scandiavian and Classical – and the festival are delighted to welcome her for her first visit to the event.
Dutch harpist Anouk Platenkamp who specialises in harp therapy and 18th century music will also be part of the international line up, and – in addition to their concerts, the Corbalan Brothers, Lily and Anouk will also be holding teaching workshops during the festival.
The exciting Breton harpist Nikolaz Cadoret is also part of the programme.
The festival also wanted to add a special one-off concert to celebrate their fifth event and so – moving away from the harp for a moment – Indian sitar master Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee will be performing at Ryde Methodist Church on the evening of Sunday, October 28th.
Back to the harp, and a unique feature of the festival is the six-day harpmaking course held in the serene setting of nearby Quarr Abbey and
led by Breton harpmaker Sylvestre Chabrin.
To get a better apprecation of this take a look at the video in the Harp on Wight 2018 section of the festival website which is www.harponwight.com
Also, very recently announced are details of this years composition competititions to compose a new piece of music for the harp. This yaer the theme is ‘Mystery and Magic’.
