Isle of Wight Walks – Easy Level – 40 Minutes A delightful wander amongst ancient trees It is a particularly beautiful place to be when the trees take on their autumn colours in October and early November. In spring the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells. Start: Parish Council car park, off Alverstone Rd on Winford to Alverstone road, grid ref: SZ566843 1 Enter the wood and start to descend. The path soon reaches a cathedral-like clearing with fallen logs offering good places to sit. 2 Bear left immediately on entering the clearing and take a rising path, the left-most of two paths leaving the clearing at the same point. Pass through a holly thicket on the way to the top where it begins to open out near the edge of the wood. Turn right to descend again just before some house gardens. Bear left at a junction, following the line of the boundary of the gardens and soon the path broadens out in a clearing by an oak tree. Follow this track onwards and downwards till it meets an even wider crossing track, shortly after passing Borthwood Jumps on the right. Interesting flowers include wood anemone, common cow wheat, […]

St Catherine’s Oratory CHALE Isle Of Wight Standing at the highest point of the Isle of Wight is the St Catherine’s Oratory, known better to Islanders as the Pepper Pot. This octagonal tower is the shell of a medieval lighthouse. Originally built in 1314 by Walter de Godeton as penance for stealing wine from the cargo of a ship run aground on Atherfield Ledge which was bound for the monastery of Livers in Picardy. The lighthouse was manned by a priest who tended to the light and prayed for the wrecked sailors. The tower is 35ft tall and is the only surviving medieval lighthouse in England, the roof is an eight-sided pyramid and inside is a square shaft, the top has eight openings designed to shine light in all directions and be seen out at sea. You can walk up to the Oratory following the footpath and the views from the hill are magnificent. Bronze Age Barrow At a distance of 15 metres (49 feet) to the south-east of the tower is a much earlier monument, a Bronze Age bowl barrow, or burial mound, which was constructed on this hilltop site about 4,000 years ago. Bowl barrows consisted of […]

Brading Station Visitor Centre, Isle of Wight Come to visit Brading Station’s Heritage Centre and the signal box, a real joy to railway enthusiasts everywhere. The centre’s tea room provides refreshments which include railway man’s lunches, cream teas, snacks and drinks to suit all tastes. In 1987 Brading Station was threatened with demolition. A strong reaction from Brading community prompted the Brading Town Trust and Brading Town Council to resolve to save the Station. In 1989 the entire Station complex was made a Grade II listed building and leased to Brading Town Trust. A community group, the Brading Station Community Centre Association, was created to manage the Station which continued until 1998. However, by the end of 1998, the Association had largely disbanded and the Station was further vandalised. In 2000 the Town Council entered into an agreement with Brading Town Trust to manage the Station. Again, efforts were made to hire out the building but insufficient income was generated. In 2002 a Market Towns Health check was undertaken and a Community Development Action Plan created. The Plan consisted of a number of projects, one of which was the restoration of the Station. In 2004 grant funding was obtained from […]

Cowes Week – Isle of Wight Cowes week is a spectacular sailing event that takes place in August each year and is regarded as one of the UK’s longest running and successful sporting event of its kind. Although sailing is the top billing this is also a great day out for everyone with live music, street entertainment, stores and food available. The event has been running since 1886 and now host over 1,000 boats taking place in up to 40 sailing events daily. Traditionally, Cowes Week takes place after Glorious Goodwood and before the Glorious Twelfth (the first day of the grouse shooting season) – occasionally the traditional dates are changed to ensure optimum racing, taking account of the tides or, as in 2012, to avoid a clash with the Olympic Games. Over the years the event has attracted British and foreign royalty, and many famous faces. Although the regatta is over 180 years old, it is only in recent times that the Week has become an integrated series of races organised by a single body. During the post-war era, each day of racing was run by a different Cowes or Solent mainland club. Every club printed their own sailing instructions […]

Now in its 20th year, the famous, annual Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival, held early in December, sees thousands of visitors flock to view over 160 theme-decorated Christmas trees, exhibited in various different locations within Brighstone and its surrounding areas. For 2015, with more beautiful trees being entered each year, we where delighted to announce yet another, much-needed venue at The Isle of Wight Pearl on the Military Road at Brighstone, who have kindly agreed to the use of their large conservatory next to their restaurant/café . This enabled more trees to be exhibited and ensure that exhibitors are given the space to present their theme without being too crowded! Other locations include: St Mary’s church; the Methodist church; the Wilberforce hall; the Reading Rooms/Social Club; and The ‘Three Bishops’ Public House, all in Brighstone village; in St Peter and St Paul’s church in neighbouring Mottistone. The four days of this major festival will be packed with lots going on. There will be gift and craft fairs (ideas for Christmas presents); Handbell ringing; Lace-making demonstrations; A “mini market”; A winter BBQ; Carol singing; The Brighstone School play and the fantastic Nativity Pageant (see below, last performed two years ago and now […]
